1980 Gibson Les Paul Custom – Wine Red

F-Spacing, Standard Spacing Why are there two different spacings? A long time ago in the 20th century, actually the electric guitar world was divided between Gibson and Fender designs. One of the differences between the two was string spacing. In general, Gibson chose a narrower string spacing at the bridge than Fender, and therefore the polepieces on Gibson humbuckers were closer together than the magnets on Fender pickups.

White had worked with Leo in the very early days of Fender Electric Instrument Manufacturing Company as the plant manager and stayed on after the company was sold to the CBS Corporation , but had grown unhappy with their management. Tom Walker worked as a sales rep at Fender. Because of a year non-compete clause in the contract that sold the Fender companies to CBS, Leo Fender was a silent partner.

The name of this partnership was changed to Musitek, Inc. In , the company started producing its first product, an amplifier designed by Leo Fender and Tom Walker called the “Sixty Five”. It was a hybrid of tube and solid state technology. The preamps used the then burgeoning solid state “op-amp” integrated circuits embodying traditional Fender preamp time constants and architecture, while the power amps typically featured a Cathode Driven Tube power amp stage, much as were used in the radio broadcast industry in AM Transmitters.

There were a few models with a tube phase splitter in them, but for the most part Music Man amplifiers used the faster responding common Grid, Cathode Coupled drive from a solid state front end that players characterized as “loud as hell”.

The Middle Series

Its futuristic-looking, offset profile has continued to have a strong pull on guitarists, perhaps most notably, the late, great Johnny Winter. The Firebird Studio T addresses the important stuff first and foremost. Gibson has switched out the traditional mini-humbuckers for the new, full-throated sound of R and T humbuckers. Fretwork is exemplary and invites note benders to dig in with massive bends.

For it sports the smaller teardrop-shaped pickguard of the early 60s and traditional Grover kidney-button Locking Tuning Machines. The slim taper neck makes less work of those complex chord forms.

Development[ edit ] In the mid s Gibson looked to create a new guitar pickup different from existing popular single coil designs. Gibson had already developed the Charlie Christian pickup and P in the s and 40s; however, these designs—like competitor Fender’s single-coil pickups—were fraught with inherent cycle hum sound interference. In June , Lover and Gibson filed a joint patent for the pickup design. This registered trademark should not to be confused with original P. In the Goldtop model was dropped from production, and the sunburst Standard took its place.

These guitars were all fitted with PAF humbuckers, which contributed greatly to the instruments’ sound. With this, smaller Alnico 2 and Alnico 5 magnets became standard.

Despite a relatively brief mainstream career spanning four years, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential electric guitarists in the history of popular music, and one of the most celebrated musicians of the 20th century. Towards the mid s he started using Fenders, starting with a Fender Duo-sonic which he played with Isley Brothers. In the summer of he bought his first Stratocaster with the help of his girlfriend, and it quickly became his signature guitar.

Hendrix played mostly right-handed models, even though he was left-handed — which played a role in the way his guitars ended up sounding, and left an overall impression on the listeners. Important to note is that the string placement was correct for a left hand player with the low E on top.

About Guitars Buying a new guitar is a considerable investment for most of us. An instrument is all about inspiration. You are the musician and the guitar is the tool you use to express your feelings and music. This has nothing to do with what models you choose or how much they cost. Some basic knowledge about the different wood types, neck and body profiles, pickups etc will help you in making the best choice. However, over the last decade or so, the MIMs has gotten a considerable face lift and the overall quality is very high.

In fact, the reason why they are cheaper, ha sless to do with quality but rather lower labour costs, cheaper type of laquer and apply methods etc. Japanese Fenders are considered to be above the Mexicans and perhaps even just as good as the US. In the 80s and early 90s, Japanese Fenders were well known for being superior to any other models and the quality is still top notch.

Gibson Les Paul Guitar Serial Information

In total ES Ts were produced, with the peak year. The ES T and it’s very similar Epiphone equivalent the Epiphone Granada that first shipped in , were really nicely made guitars. They were entry level instruments, yet certainly not built to lesser standards. Gibson may well have added fancy inlays and to it’s more expensive guitars, but the humble ES T still got the fine body and neck woods, superbly assembled and finished in nitrocellulose.

Maple top back and sides Neck: Three piece laminate mahogany. Gibson tune-o-matic bridge, bail tailpiece. It is typical of Gibson’s early 70s s; the tailpiece is the original early 50’s style, after 12 or so years of the zig-zag version for comparison see a s ES , and control knobs are Gibson witch-hats. Pickups part numbers and are Gibson ‘patent numbers’ so named because of the patent number sticker on the underside and tuning-keys are Kluson model VP.

The stamped six-digit serial number on this guitar was used from up until later in some instances and is also repeated on the label in the soundhole. Gibson serial numbers are notoriously unreliable in the early s, and tend to be of less use when dating an instrument than looking at the guitars features. With respect materials, nothing has changed since the very begining. Front and back bound, with a bound neck and split parallelogram inlays. Towards the end of the seventies and into the eighties there were bigger changes afoot; first, a laminate maple neck in have a look at a ES D , changing back to mahogany, but with additional mahogany back and sides in This ES D has a nice three-tone burst though with comparatively thin red area; contrasting nicely with the chrome-plated bail-type tailpiece and humbuckers.

This guitar has a rosewood bridge saddle and base – this would be upgraded to a tune-o-matic by the end of the decade. Controls are topped with witch hat knobs with silver inserts, to match the other chrome hardware.


Compare this body shape, particularly the bevelling around the horns, with a later Gibson Ripper – these later Rippers have a far more sculptured look about them, although this is not always easy to see in photographs. A total of Rippers were shipped in , with the vast majority in Natural finish as seen here, although many very early ones had a tobacco or cherry sunburst finish.

See the Ripper shipping stats for further details. This is a really punchy bass; lots of Gibson low end, but with so much more higher frequencies than Gibson’s older basses.

Note the major changes to neck construction and neck joint. Note the minor change in maple top construction and body tenon route. Note that is a name change from “Standard” to “Deluxe” in this time period. The change is typically associated with the addition of mini-humbuckers, the 3pc neck, trans tenon, and a “Deluxe” engraved truss rod cover. So, let’s say that a 3pc neck always equals a ‘Deluxe’.

Tweet Gibson USA’s lineup of electric guitars finds the sweet spot between tradition and innovation Gibson just lifted the tent flap on its new electric guitar offerings and early indications point to as a banner year for the brand. And Gibson is also giving some of its more exotic models facelifts in the coming year. A lot of work goes into the neck carve and fretwork of the Les Paul Faded T to evoke that sense of a seasoned and familiar instrument that fits you like the proverbial glove.

He remained active until his untimely death in February His main guitar in the early years was a Les Paul acquired from Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac, which he owned for more than 40 years before selling it in This is the guitar that Gary used on his best selling album Still Got The Blues, and the one he kept by his side until his death. I broke the neck off while having a row with me chick. It appears thought that the neck still had a Fender logo on the headstock based on the footage, so maybe Gary ended up just grabbing a neck from another guitar. Both of the humbuckers are Di Marzios, which Gary seemed to like very much. I think Di Marzio pickups are a major improvement on the pickups supplied standard with the new Gibsons and Fenders.

All numbers were impressed into the wood and a six digit number assigned, though no particular order was given and some instruments had a letter prefix.
