Under a Creative Commons license open access Abstract We describe late Miocene tetrapod footprints tracks from the Trachilos locality in western Crete Greece , which show hominin-like characteristics. They occur in an emergent horizon within an otherwise marginal marine succession of Messinian age latest Miocene , dated to approximately 5. The tracks indicate that the trackmaker lacked claws, and was bipedal, plantigrade, pentadactyl and strongly entaxonic. The impression of the large and non-divergent first digit hallux has a narrow neck and bulbous asymmetrical distal pad. The lateral digit impressions become progressively smaller so that the digital region as a whole is strongly asymmetrical. A large, rounded ball impression is associated with the hallux. Morphometric analysis shows the footprints to have outlines that are distinct from modern non-hominin primates and resemble those of hominins. The interpretation of these footprints is potentially controversial.

The smaller of two Minoan snake goddess figurines The Minoans seem to have prominently worshiped a Great Goddess, which had previously led to the belief that their society was matriarchal. However it is now known that this was not the case; the Minoan pantheon featured many deities, among which a young, spear-wielding male god is also prominent. They are often represented by serpents , birds, poppies or an animal on the head.
According to Nanno Marinatos, “The hierarchy and relationship of gods within the pantheon is difficult to decode from the images alone. It was not dominated by fertility any more than any religion of the past or present has been, and it addressed gender identity, rites of passage, and death. It is reasonable to assume that both the organization and the rituals, even the mythology, resembled the religions of Near Eastern palatial civilizations.
Minoan sacred symbols include the bull and its horns of consecration , the labrys double-headed axe , the pillar , the serpent, the sun-disc and the tree. Harissis and Anastasios V.

The site was first occupied some time around BCE in what is called the Aceramic Neolithic period aceramic because no pottery was produced. The Bronze Age was not to begin for a further four thousand years. It is thought that Knossos was the first and oldest Neolithic site in Crete and the first indication of human activity on the island is located in the exact area where the Palace and its Central Court were to be located.
So humans had been continually active on the site for five thousand years before the First Palace was constructed. Part of the West Wing Although the Neolithic gave way to the Bronze Age, when no doubt new peoples arrived from the East, there is no evidence that the original population on the Kephala Hill was replaced by the newcomers. More likely was a gradual transition from neolithic to bronze age practices.
Jan Driessen thinks it was important at Knossos as well. It was found in locations which suggest that the ground had been cleared for construction during EM III. As at other Palatial sites on Crete, large scale building preceded the actual construction of the First Palace. What evidence there is tends to be found on the perimeter of the later palace or on the slopes of the Kephala hill on which the palace was built.
These walls already had the north-south, east-west orientation which would be used in the building of the later palace. Just outside the area where the palace was built a number of structures probably date to the prepalatial period. A large wall running south from the north west corner of the area where the first palace would later be built may well have been a terrace wall supporting a flat level on which some structure was built.

The criticism stems from their investigation of growth rings in modern olive trees on Santorini. The authors attempt with additional arguments, beyond their botanical investigation, to defend the traditional low chronology of the Santorini eruption of around BC. However, they ignore other crucial publications with radiocarbon dates concerning the Santorini eruption. In this response, we evaluate and negate their main arguments, and present our own conclusions.
Olive tree growth rings Cherubini et al. Their article gives the strong impression that research involving the use of annual growth rings in olive trees is inherently hopeless. Have other researchers in the Mediterranean region managed to carry out successful research on olive trees involving annual growth rings? The answer is yes. Terral and Durand investigated samples of modern olive wood and samples of ancient charcoal from olive trees in France and Spain. The authors succeeded in distinguishing tree-ring properties of irrigated olive trees from those cultivated under dry conditions rainfall only.
Interestingly, Cherubini is one of the co-authors of that article.
